How does Piracy Monitor work?
Piracy Monitor checks known piracy sites for your titles and author name every 6 hours, and it checks a new book right after you add it. Once a day it also looks for audiobook uploads of your titles on YouTube. Automatic scans miss listings. Those sites try to block them. Use Manual Search now and then and check the sites yourself. When something matches, you can generate a DMCA notice from your saved contact email and book details. If a match is wrong, flag it. Those reports are how the matching gets tuned. A notice is a draft you send. It is not legal advice.
Which books does Piracy Monitor scan, and how do I get accurate matches?
Piracy Monitor scans every book in your Book Library. You don't add books to it separately: if a book is in your library, it is scanned. What gets checked - Every 6 hours, each of your books is searched on the piracy sites Piracy Monitor watches. At the time of writing these are Anna's Archive, Library Genesis, PDF Drive, Mobilism, Ocean of PDF, Epub.pub and PDF Room. - When you add a new book to Book Library, it is scanned right away instead of waiting for the next run. Editing a book you already have doesn't trigger an extra scan. - Once a day, sites that block automated visits are looked up through search-engine listings instead, and YouTube is checked for audiobooks of your titles. The line under the page title shows when your books were last scanned, for example Auto-scanning every 6 hours ยท last scanned 2h ago. How a match is confirmed The scan doesn't report a search result just because it mentions your title. It opens the listing page and only reports it when your book's title and your author name both appear on it. Each listing is reported once, so you won't get the same address twice. Get better matches 1. Open Book Library from the sidebar. 2. Edit each book and make sure the title is the one you publish under. 3. Fill in the Author Name field, or choose the right Pen Name if you have saved pen names. The scan uses this name to confirm a listing really is your book. A book with no author name gives the scan less to go on. When something is found New matches are added to your Piracy Monitor list with the status Discovered, and you get an in-app notification titled New piracy match found (or the number of matches, if there are several). Automatic scans can't see everything. Some sites work hard to block automated checks, so run a Manual Search every so often as well.
How do I search piracy sites myself and log what I find?
Automatic scans miss some listings, so Piracy Monitor gives you a quick way to check the sites yourself and log what you find. Search the sites 1. Open Piracy Monitor from the sidebar. 2. Click Manual Search at the top of the page. A search panel opens. 3. Choose the book from the dropdown. You can also add a new book from the same list. 4. Click a site button to search that site for the book in a new tab, or click Open All to open every site at once. The panel covers Google (PDF results), Anna's Archive and its other addresses, Library Genesis, PDF Drive, Z-Library (through Google), Mobilism, Ocean of PDF, PDF Room and Epub.pub. If only one tab opens when you click Open All, allow pop-ups for the app in your browser. The DMCA Resources links at the bottom of the panel go to the removal and abuse pages of Google, Cloudflare, Internet Archive, Scribd, PDF Drive and Epub.pub. Click Close Search to hide the panel. Log a listing you found 1. Click Add Report. 2. Choose the Book. Add the ISBN if you want it included in the takedown notice. 3. Paste the address of the pirated page into Infringing URL. 4. If you know the site's abuse or DMCA address, enter it in Site Contact Email. It becomes the To address of the notice. 5. Leave Status as Discovered unless you have already acted on it. 6. Add any Notes, then click Add Report. Book and Infringing URL are required. The report's timeline starts with an entry recording when you added it and its first status. If you have pen names, a Pen Name field also appears, so you can filter your reports by pen name later.
How do I send a DMCA takedown notice from Piracy Monitor?
Piracy Monitor can prepare a takedown notice for a listing and send it from your own email account. It fills in the wording for you; check it and make sure it is accurate for your situation before you send it. Before you start To send from the app, connect an email provider (Gmail or another email account) in Settings. Until you do, Piracy Monitor shows a banner with a Connect Email โ link. You can still copy the notice and send it yourself. Send a notice 1. Open Piracy Monitor from the sidebar. 2. Find the report and click Send DMCA in its row. The button shows on reports with the status Discovered. 3. Check the To address. Reports found by the automatic scan already have the site's contact filled in. 4. If you write under more than one pen name, choose who the notice is from under Send as. 5. Under Email Template, keep Default DMCA notice or pick one of your own templates from Email Templates. Templates are filled in with the book title, the infringing address, the ISBN and your name and email. 6. Read the Email Subject and Email Body and edit anything you need to. 7. Click Send & Mark Sent. The notice is sent from your connected account, the report's status changes to DMCA Sent, and DMCA notice sent is added to its timeline. What the default notice contains The default notice names the book (with its ISBN, if the report has one), gives the address where the copy is being shared, asks for it to be removed, and includes a statement that the information is accurate and that you are the copyright holder, signed with your name and the date. If any of that isn't right for you, edit the body before sending. Also ask Google to drop the page At the bottom of the window there's an option to ask Google to remove the page from its search results. Google only takes these requests through its own form, so use Open Google's removal form and Copy the page link. This doesn't take the page down; it stops Google listing it. Tick I filed it with Google (adds a note to this report) to record it on the report's timeline. Copying instead of sending Copy Notice copies the standard notice text to your clipboard. If you changed the wording or picked a template, select and copy the text in Email Body instead.
Why do Anna's Archive, Ocean of PDF and YouTube takedowns work differently?
For most sites, Send DMCA opens an email notice. Three kinds of listing get a different window, because those sites don't handle notices the usual way. Anna's Archive Anna's Archive has no abuse email. It takes copyright claims through a form on its own site. The File this with Anna's Archive window shows the address to report, and gives you: - Open the copyright form, to go to the site's form. - Copy the notice, for wording you can paste where the form asks for a description. - I've filed it, to mark the report as DMCA Sent once you've submitted the form. The site may also be reachable at other addresses, and the same form applies to all of them. Ocean of PDF The app shows Ocean of PDF does not honor DMCA notices. As the window explains, the site's operators upload the books themselves and ignore notices, and a notice sent to the site can expose your name and address to them. Instead it offers: - Open Cloudflare's DMCA form, since Cloudflare passes complaints on to the site's hosting provider. - Send to the registrar, which opens the usual email notice addressed to the site's domain registrar. Check the address before sending. YouTube YouTube takes copyright complaints through its own form, which asks you to sign in with a Google account. The File this with YouTube window shows the video link to paste, and gives you: - Open YouTube's form - I've filed it, to mark the report as DMCA Sent. - Email a notice instead, which opens the email notice addressed to YouTube's copyright address. Check first that the video isn't your own or a licensed upload. Google search removal All three windows also include the option to ask Google to remove the page from search results, with a checkbox to record that you did.
How do I track a takedown and mark a wrong match?
Each report in Piracy Monitor has a status and a timeline, so you can see where every takedown stands. Statuses Change a report's status from the dropdown in its Status column. The options are Discovered, DMCA Sent, Awaiting Response, Resolved, Ignored, False Positive and Escalated. Every change is added to the report's timeline, and the confirmation message has an undo option. Reports marked Resolved, Ignored or False Positive are hidden from the list. Tick Show all to see them. The numbers at the top - Total Alerts: all reports matching your current filters. - Active Threats: reports that are Discovered, DMCA Sent, Awaiting Response or Escalated. - Resolved: reports marked Resolved. - Removal Rate: resolved reports as a share of all reports. The book filter (and pen name filter, if you have pen names) changes both the list and these numbers. Keep a timeline 1. Click the clock icon (View timeline) in a report's row. 2. Type what happened, such as a reply from the site, in Add a note or actionโฆ. 3. Click Add. Entries are listed newest first, alongside the status changes and sent notices the app records for you. Flag a wrong match If an automatic match isn't your book, open the menu at the end of its row and choose Report false positive. The status changes to False Positive and the match is sent for review, which helps tune the scan. Setting the status to False Positive from the dropdown does the same. Update several reports at once Tick the boxes next to reports to select them. The bar that appears lets you Mark Resolved or edit them together. Bulk editing can change Status, Site Contact Email and Notes for every selected report. To remove a report entirely, choose Delete from the same menu.
Piracy Monitor troubleshooting: missing matches, sending problems and greyed-out buttons
A listing I know about wasn't found Automatic scans aren't the full picture. Some sites block automated visits. When that happens you'll see a note such as ... block automated visits, so we check their search-engine listings once a day, which can miss pages. Use Manual Search to check the sites yourself, and log anything you find with Add Report. Also check that the book is in Book Library with the correct title and author or pen name. A listing is only reported when both appear on the page. The page says scan pending Scan pending means your account hasn't been scanned yet. Scans run in the background, and any book you add is scanned shortly after you add it. There's no Send DMCA button on a report Send DMCA only appears on reports with the status Discovered. If you changed the status and want to send a notice, set it back to Discovered. I can't click Send & Mark Sent Hover over the button to see why. The reasons are: - Connect an email provider to send: connect Gmail or another email account in Settings. - Enter a valid To address: the To box needs a real email address. Some sites take claims through a web form instead; see the article on Anna's Archive, Ocean of PDF and YouTube. - Choose which pen name to send as: pick a pen name under Send as. - Write a message or pick a template first: the Email Body is empty. If sending fails, the error from your email provider is shown so you can fix it and try again. Add Report is greyed out Your role on this account can view Piracy Monitor but not change it. The account owner can change your access under collaborators in Settings. The same applies if you see Your role can't add piracy reports. after using Leak Detector. I see No Access Your role on this account doesn't include access to this tool. means your collaborator role doesn't include Piracy Monitor. Ask the account owner to add it. Example reports I can't edit During the page tour, Piracy Monitor shows example reports. They can't be edited, deleted or sent; add a real report to try those actions.
